PSLEM’s Walk-a-Payung breaks its own record

A total of 1,088 participants walking with umbrellas in the vicinity of Sunway Pyramid this morning certainly helped to raise awareness that SLE patients have to avoid the sun. Their participation in the Walk-a-Payung 2008 event this morning also helped the Persatuan SLE Malaysia (PSLEM) to break its own record in the Malaysia Book of Records’ “Largest Participation of Walkers with Umbrellas” category. The total of 1,088 participants topped last year’s total of 727 participants by almost 50%.

This morning’s walk was led by State Assemblyman for Subang Jaya YB Hannah Yeoh, PSLEM’s President Assoc. Prof. Dr. Esha Das Gupta, and Walk-a-Payung Organising Committee Chairman Datin Rahmah Kassim, as well as two special guests all the way from Singapore - MTV VJ Twins, May and Choy.

Below are some pictorial highlights from this morning’s event.

Walk-a-Payung 2008, a walkathon in aid of people suffering from Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), will be held on Sunday, 14 December, at the Sunway Pyramid Shopping Mall, Bandar Sunway, Selangor, and will feature participants carrying umbrellas during the 2-kilometre event.

Objectives of the walkathon:

  1. To use the umbrella to raise awareness that SLE patients have to avoid the sun and of SLE as a potentially devastating disease. Through this event, PSLEM aims to contribute towards an earlier diagnosis of the disease among SLE sufferers in Malaysia. Patients who are diagnosed early will have a better chance of survival.
  2. To raise money for the SLE Fund for needy SLE patients requiring joint replacement and cataract operations (due to long-term steroids), and certain expensive medications.
  3. To retain Persatuan SLE Malaysia’s place in the Malaysia Book of Records as the “Largest Participation of Walkers with Umbrellas”. Last year’s Walk-a-Payung record was 727 participants. This year, to break the record, PSLEM must achieve at least 880 participants (20% more).

The State Assemblywoman for Subang Jaya, YB Hannah Yeoh, who has a family member with SLE, will flag off the Walk-a-Payung. The half-day family event will also feature free health screening (blood sugar, blood pressure, and body mass index tests), music and dance performances and a Fun Quiz on SLE.

PSLEM invites all SLE patients and their family members, as well as members of the public to walk for a good cause. Walk-a-Payung tickets are available from PSLEM at RM20 per person.

Accommodation

For SLE patients and their family members who wish to have hotel accommodation on 13 and 14 December, please call Siew Lian or Lucy at PSLEM, Tel: (03) 7957-7672, or send an sms to 013-383-8644 with your name and address and the words “Kem Keluarga Walk-a-Payung” for a copy of the registration form.

Despite the peak holiday period, PSLEM has obtained a special rate of RM80 nett for a room with either a queen-size bed or two single beds (please let us know which type you prefer) at the Sun Inns Hotel, which is just beside Sunway Pyramid Shopping Mall. PSLEM will provide three meals — Saturday lunch, Saturday buffet steamboat dinner, and Sunday breakfast — at RM20 per adult and RM9 per child of 4 to 10 years old.
